The average child will eat three cups of sugar of Halloween Candy!! That's 144 tsp of sugar or 144 sugar cubes!!! Would you let your child eat 144 sugar cubes? Imagine what damage that can do to not only their little growing bodies, but also their growing minds.

Here are healthy "tricks" for healthy "Trick or Treaters":

Set expectations early. Prepare your child the day before Halloween. Talk about how much fun it will be to go trick-or-treating but not so much fun for their body if they eat a lot of candy. It is important for kids to learn that candy is a treat that should be eaten in small doses. They can spread their candy over many days, by dividing it up. Help your child see the benefit of making Halloween treats last longer.

You don't want to teach your child to eat candy every day, since it is a once in a while treat. Teach them the importance of "portion control" by letting them choose their favorites two pieces to place in a baggy for a special "treat" in their lunch box. Make a bunch of mini bags of treats and place them in the child's lunch box every couple of days. Have your child actively participate in dividing up their candy and making little treat bags they can enjoy. This gets the child involved in the decision-making and helps them feel productive and appreciated.

A great idea is to let your child choose their favorite pieces and package the rest off in a shoebox to send to our troops overseas! This is an opportunity to teach your child about giving to those who are in service for us!

Or let them choose 4-5 pieces of their favorite candy and then encourage them to donate the rest to a homeless shelter to give someone else a "special treat", especially those that don't normally get them.

Also, you can allow your child to pick a handful of their favorites to enjoy over the next few weeks, and save the rest for decorations for this years ginger bread house making! If you do store the candy, store it up and away in a cabinet where it's out of sight for you and them which helps to avoid temptation.

What are you "treating" with this Halloween? Instead of giving out sugary candy this Halloween, here are a few other suggestions that kids will love:

Stickers
Bouncy balls
Whistles
Balloons
Mini bags of natural popcorn
Individual packets of almond butter (avoid peanut butter as some children have a peanut allergy)
Packets of low sugar instant hot cocoa
Beef Jerky
Cheesesticks (if it's not going to be warm out)
70% dark chocolate squares
Mini bottles of water
Little plastic rings or glowsticks
Sugar-free gum
Temporary tattoos
Packs of almonds (avoid peanuts as some kids have a peanut allergy)
Frisbees
Hair bows for girls
Yo-yos
All natural suckers made with xylitol

If children and parents that you know and are familiar with are coming by, pass out fresh fruit (doing this to strangers most likely will make them throw it out as they won't know if it's tainted or not) like oranges, and bananas!

Your child's health is just as important as your own. If you wouldn't eat 3 cups of sugar, then they probably shouldn't either. Watch their sugar intake and keep them hydrated. Be sure to feed them a protein-rich dinner before trick-or-treating to keep them satisfied, and happy throughout the night!
